Bouchard Père & Fils Gevrey Chambertin 2008

The Bouchard 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin – of which there are some 40,000 bottles – “is not an estate wine,” explains Prost, but “is farmed under exactly the same conditions, with our people doing all of the work.” Grenadine and dark chocolate in the nose and on a polished, fruit-filled, subtly saline palate lead to a sweet, smoke-tinged back-end. I would expect this to remain enjoyable for at least 5-7 years.

Grape Variety: 100% Pinot Noir

Vinification: Fermentation in small temperature-controlled stainless steel vats.Maturing in oak barrels from France.

Description: Intense, perfumed bouquet with fruit aromas and an animal touch. Nice structure and lovely fleshiness. Good ageing potential.

Reviewers:

Robert Parker 87/100 (2006) - Wine Advocate # 186. Dec 2009. Reviewer : David Schildknecht.

Jancis Robinson 17/20 (2006) - Tasted Jan 08 - Dark spicy fruit and a hint of coffee. Fine fluid tannins. More refined and silky than almost anything tasted so far. (JH)

Wine Spectator 89/100 (2007) - Issue Web Only 2009 - Ripe, even slightly jammy and also on the burly side, with dry tannins behind raspberry, plum and herbal flavors. That suggests enjoying this on the earlier side. Best from 2010 through 2016.

BSAllen Meadows, Burghound.com, 89pts (2007)  - "This is unusually complex aromatically for a villages level wine with classic Gevrey aromas of pungent and slightly gamy notes of warm earth, underbrush and a hint of spice that sets off beautifully relatively finely detailed medium-bodied flavors that possess fine precision and obvious minerality on the intense, frank and persistent finish. This is definitely worth a look for value hunters."

Wine Enthusiast, 88pts ( 2007 ) - "A solid, chunky wine that expresses the weight of Gevrey. The tannins are firm but already well integrated with the plum skin fruits. Maybe the wood element is too much, but this could soften."
